All residents of South Florida need to be prepared for hurricane season: June 1st - November 30th.  Preparing now for an emergency will give you and your family time to react safely and in a well thought-out manner.

If you have a grill, make sure that you have plenty of fuel on hand (propane or charcoal).  Now is the time to make sure that you can cook on your grill.  Let's not forget life's essentials, like having plenty of water and food for each person of your household. A plan of action for you and your family can go a long way toward reducing potential suffering from any type of disaster that could strike.

Take pictures of all your valuables (including furniture) for insurance purposes.  It is recommended that you put the pictures (or disc with the pictures) in a secured water proof bag(s) with your insurance policy.  It is a good practice to put all important papers in secured water proof bag(s) prior to the storm. Letter sized paper fit nicely in a 2 gallon size water proof bag.

In addition, as a homeowner in Cottages, we should all do the following prior to and after a storm:

  • Bring in or secure potted plants, patio furniture, barbeque grills, etc. or anything else that could become a flying object.
  • Print and store in your cell phone any important phone numbers that you might need during or after a storm.
  • Check in with neighbors that might need help preparing for the storm and also check to be sure they are OK after the storm.
  • Let family and friends out of town know your plan for riding out the storm. They will worry and will want to know how and where to contact you after the storm.
